The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
