No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
