Department of Justice Joins Legal Challenge to Halt California's New Electoral Map
Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
